Beach Holidays / South Africa
With nearly 3 000km of coastline (much of it remote and uninhabited) and access to two oceans, South Africa is a spectacular beach and coast destination.
Cape Town is the fabled meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean (although this is actually further east), Cape Agulhas features the most southerly point on the African continent and the beaches of the southern Cape coast at well known Plettenberg Bay and Knysna along the Garden Route are popular with South Africans and foreigners alike. Further north is the biodiversity hotspot of the Wild Coast and then the subtropical province of KwaZulu-Natal.
North of Durban one enters Maputaland, South Africa’s answer to Mozambique. This is our favourite beach destination in South Africa: golden sandy beaches emerge from beneath tall vegetated dunes and meet the warm Indian Ocean. Along this 200km stretch of uninhabited coastline is located one of the world’s most important nesting sites for leatherback and loggerhead turtles.
Marine life here is incredibly diverse and this is one of the prime dive destinations worldwide: dolphins, whales, myriad tropical fish and hard and soft corals characterise an underwater wonderland accessible via both diving and snorkelling.
