South Africa / CAMPS

There are literally hundreds of luxurious bush accommodation options in South Africa – many are more ‘boutique hotel’ than bush camps – and without experience it can be very difficult to choose one that offers the best guiding and game viewing for the best price and for the circumstances that suit that particular visitor. There are more than 80 top end lodges in the Greater KrugerPark / Sabi-Sand area for example. Knowing which is offering the best cheetah or wild dog viewing at any one time is very difficult to achieve without insider knowledge.
Nonetheless many camps do offer perennially good game viewing and there are a selection of camps that have regularly produced the goods for us. Our favourite area is the Greater Kruger Park, otherwise known as the lowveld, and here we recommend Londolozi, Vuyatela, Tanda Tula, Ngala Tented Camp and Pafuri. Each of these offers its own unique game viewing features and charms and some are better at some times of the year than others, but all offer fantastic hospitality and great guiding.
In the Maputaland region Phinda and Amakosi stand out as excellent destinations. As far as malaria free destinations are concerned, in the Eastern Cape we favour Kwandwe with its unique assemblage of wildlife and excellent family programmes, in the Northern Cape Tswalu is equally good, while closer to the hub of Johannesburg there are a number of very good lodges in the Madikwe Game Reserve.
